Surface Tunnel route: reaching the escape objective in Manufacturing

The 'Find the Surface Tunnel' objective is a main story goal pointing toward your potential escape from the facility.

The Problem

“I found the objective to find the Surface Tunnel but I cannot figure out where it actually is.”

The Problem

I found the objective to find the Surface Tunnel but I cannot figure out where it actually is.

The Solution

"Find the Surface Tunnel" is a main story objective in Abiotic Factor. It marks the point where the narrative shifts from "survive the facility" to "find a way out." The objective appears after you have progressed through the Office and early Manufacturing sectors — it is not an early-game task, and attempting it undergeared will get you killed by the enemies and environmental hazards along the route.

Where It Is The Surface Tunnel is in the Manufacturing Sector. The key intersection to navigate from is where the Forge area meets the Tram (see tram guide) Station. From there, locate the bridge that spans the tunnel zone. After crossing the bridge, drop down to the path on the left side just past the tunnel entrance. Follow this path upward — a large pink forcefield is your visual landmark. The forcefield is visible from a distance, so if you are not seeing it, you are not in the right area yet.

Preparation This is a mid-game objective. Do not attempt it with early-game gear. Minimum loadout:

  • Armor: At minimum, a Security Vest (22 armor) or Cascade Chestplate (21 armor, 7.0 weight). A Hazmat Suit (see armor guide) if the route passes through any radiation zones.
  • Weapons: Ranged weapon preferred — the enemies along this route include Order soldiers who are dangerous in melee at close quarters. Bring ample ammo.
  • Healing: Medkit (1-2), Bandages (3+ for Bleeding from soldier attacks), Splint (1 for fall damage from the drop-down).
  • Food/Water: Full hunger and thirst (see water guide) bars, plus one filled Water Bottle. The route from the Tram Station through to the Surface Tunnel is long enough that thirst can become an issue.

Environmental Hazards The Manufacturing Sector features poison gas corridors, industrial machinery hazards, and potential radiation pockets near the tunnel entrance. A Lab Mask (negates gas and spore effects) or Gas Mask (heavy protection with NATO filters) is strongly recommended for the poison gas sections. The drop-down from the bridge does fall damage — do not jump with low health.

What Happens After Finding the Surface Tunnel progresses the main story. It also unlocks a navigation connection between sectors — the tunnel area becomes a transit hub that links previously disconnected parts of the facility. Once you have reached it once, subsequent trips are faster because you know the route and can use Trams to skip the early sections.

Tram Shortcut If you have unlocked Tram Stations in Manufacturing, use them to reach the Forge/Tram Station intersection faster. The Tram system turns a 5-minute walk through hostile corridors into a 10-second safe trip, which matters when you are geared up and do not want to burn resources on random encounters before reaching the objective.

Step-by-Step

  1. Gear check: Security Vest or better, Lab Mask for gas corridors, ranged weapon, 1-2 Medkits, 3+ Bandages, full food/water.
  2. Travel to the Manufacturing Sector. If Trams are unlocked, use the Tram to reach the Forge/Tram Station intersection.
  3. From the intersection, locate the bridge spanning the tunnel area. Cross it.
  4. Just past the tunnel entrance, drop down to the path on the left side. Heal if fall damage took you below half health.
  5. Follow the path upward. Look for the large pink forcefield — it is your destination marker, visible from the path.
  6. Approach the forcefield to trigger the objective completion and story progression.
  7. After completing, note the tram and transit connections unlocked — this area becomes a navigation hub for future trips.

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting this objective with early-game gear — Manufacturing enemies hit harder than Office Sector enemies.
  • Not bringing a Lab Mask or Gas Mask — poison gas corridors along the route deal continuous damage that Medkits cannot outpace.
  • Jumping down from the bridge at low health — the fall damage can finish you before you even start the path to the forcefield.
  • Getting turned around after the drop-down — the pink forcefield is your landmark; if you cannot see it, climb higher.
