Water and thirst: Water Coolers, boiling, and staying hydrated
Build your base near a Water Cooler and dehydration stops being a problem. The Cooler provides infinite water — you just need to walk past it regularly.
The Problem
“My character keeps getting dehydrated. Water Coolers seem limited and boiling takes forever.”
⚡ Before You Start
🎒 What to Bring
Prerequisites
- Locate a Water Cooler in the Office Sector
- Craft a Water Bottle for travel
- Understand that tainted water causes sickness
Recommended Loadout
- Water Cooler (found, not crafted)
- Water Bottle for exploration
- Boiling pot setup as backup
Common Mistakes
- 1.Building far from a Water Cooler and spending more time running for water than exploring
- 2.Drinking from random sinks in Lab Sector and getting the Sick debuff
- 3.Forgetting filled water bottles when entering Portal Worlds where clean water is rare
The Problem
My character keeps getting dehydrated. Water Coolers seem limited and boiling takes forever.
The Solution
There are four ways to get water in Abiotic Factor, and understanding their trade-offs is the difference between a smooth run and a dehydration death spiral.
Water Container Capacities (Wiki Verified)
| Container | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water Bottle / Cooking Pot | 1,000 mL | Portable, fill at Coolers |
| Water Cooler | 4,500 mL | Infinite supply at base |
| Water Barrel | 10,000 mL | Unlocked after Manufacturing West |
| Moisture Teleporter | ~30 mL / 2 min | Passive generation into nearby containers |
Method 1: Water Coolers (Best) Water Coolers hold 4,500 mL and never run dry — the supply is infinite. Build your base within walking distance of one. The cafeteria in the Office Sector has one in an easily defensible position. The Water Barrel (10,000 mL) is the upgrade path, unlocked after exploring Manufacturing West.
Method 2: Sinks (Limited) Sinks are everywhere but hold very little water. Each refills automatically after a few in-game days, making them unreliable as a primary source. Only useful for the first 1-2 hours of a run.
Method 3: Boiled Water (Backup) Boiling ratio is 4:1 — boil 1,000 mL of tainted water on a powered stove to produce 250 mL of clean water. Takes a few minutes. Inefficient (75% volume loss), but works when no Cooler is reachable.
Method 4: Water Filter Barrel (Upgrade) Unlocked in Cascade Laboratories. Converts tainted water to clean at 1:1 ratio instantly, up to 10,000 mL capacity. This makes boiling obsolete. Uses Refined Carbon as the filter medium.
Traits (Wiki Verified)
- Naturally Moist: Reduces thirst rate by 20% (cost: varies).
- Lead Belly (cost: 8 skill points): Drink tainted or irradiated water with no Sick debuff. Pricey but eliminates all water logistics for solo players.
Portal World (see Portal Worlds) Survival In Portal Worlds, clean water sources are extremely rare. Always carry at least one filled Water Bottle (1,000 mL capacity) before entering any portal. The Moisture Teleporter can generate passive water (~30 mL per 2 minutes) but is far too slow to rely on as a primary source.
| Source | Capacity | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water Cooler | 4,500 mL | Infinite | Best base water source |
| Water Barrel | 10,000 mL | Infinite | Upgrade over Cooler |
| Boiled Water | 250 mL clean per 1,000 mL tainted | 4:1 | Backup only, 75% loss |
| Water Filter Barrel | 10,000 mL, converts tainted→clean | 1:1 | Uses Refined Carbon |
| Moisture Teleporter | ~30 mL / 2 min | Slow passive | Supplementary only |
Step-by-Step
- On day one, identify the nearest Water Cooler — cafeteria is the safest early option.
- Build your bed (see sleep guide) and Crafting Bench (see Crafting Bench upgrades) nearby so you drink every time you return to base.
- Collect empty Water Bottles from the Office Sector (cafeteria, break rooms).
- Fill each Water Bottle at the Cooler before extended exploration or portal world entry.
- Avoid drinking from any water source in Lab Sector unless you have Lead Belly or a confirmed safe source — Lab sinks are frequently contaminated.
- When you reach the Manufacturing Sector, prioritize unlocking the Water Filter recipe for the 1:1 conversion upgrade.
- Set up a boiling station with stored tainted water as your always-ready backup.
- In co-op, designate one player as the "water runner" who keeps the base bottles filled between expeditions.
Common Mistakes
- Building far from a Water Cooler and spending more time running for water than exploring.
- Drinking from random sinks in Lab Sector and getting the Sick debuff — it stacks and can end a run.
- Forgetting filled water bottles when entering Portal Worlds where clean water is rare or nonexistent.
- Relying on boiling as your main water source instead of upgrading to a Water Filter.
- Not collecting empty Water Bottles early, leaving you without portable water for expeditions.
