Finding the Blacksmith and the Forge in Manufacturing West
The Blacksmith is a stationary trader located in the Manufacturing West sector. He is easy to overlook because he stands behind a simple wooden trading box inside a large industrial building, with no prominent marker or quest directing you to him. Many players pass him during the main story progression and later need to return specifically for his unique wares.
Prerequisites for Access
Before you can reach the Blacksmith, you must complete the Office Sector and obtain a Power Cell. Use the Power Cell on the forklift that is wedged under the door leading to Manufacturing West. This action opens the path to the new sector.
Route to the Forge
Once inside Manufacturing West, follow these steps to locate the Blacksmith’s workshop, known as the Forge:
- Take the Tram to the Manufacturing West station.
- Exit the tram and proceed along the main corridor heading east.
- The Forge is located on the right side of the main factory floor.
Visual Cues: The Forge is identifiable by a large pot of boiling solder visible through its doorway. Inside, you will see a wooden trading box on the floor in front of the Blacksmith, surrounded by glowing heat and industrial equipment.
Base Placement Note: The upper levels of the F.O.R.G.E. structure are a short distance from the Blacksmith. Establishing a mid-game base here can reduce travel time for repeated trades.
How Trading Works
Trading with the Blacksmith requires a specific interaction. The process is a 1:1 exchange where you place a requested item into the wooden box, and he places the new item inside for you to collect.
Numbered Workflow:
- Stand directly in front of the wooden trading box on the floor.
- Open your inventory.
- Drag the requested item from your inventory into the wooden box. Do not drop it on the floor or on the Blacksmith’s character model.
- Wait for the Blacksmith to process the trade.
- Collect the new item from the same box.
Key Mechanics:
- All trades are a 1:1 exchange.
- The Blacksmith’s stock is infinite and never runs out.
- All input items are renewable through Portal World respawns or enemy farming, making him a permanent resource source.
Complete Trade Inventory
The Blacksmith offers 11 distinct trades. These are grouped by their primary function.
Critical Story Progression Trades
These trades provide items necessary to repair the Synchrotron and progress to the Cascade Laboratories.
| You Give | You Receive | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Reinforced Hose | Optic Lens | Required for Synchrotron pump repair. Also used in the Laser Power Converter, Magbow, and Projection Matrix recipes. |
| Solder | Fiber Optics (Fibre Optic Cable) | Required for Synchrotron repair. This item cannot be found in crates anywhere in the facility. |
| Axle Grease | Capacitor | A quest-related item that is only available through this trade. |
Environmental Protection Trade
This is the single most important trade the Blacksmith offers, as it provides the only method to obtain the Heat Suit.
| You Give | You Receive | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Air Compressor | Heat Suit (Fire Proximity Suit) | Provides +3 Heat Resistance. Required for the Tarasque boss fight and the Mycofields portal world. Cannot be crafted or found elsewhere. |
Crafting Material Trades
These trades convert common enemy drops and materials into scarce or high-demand crafting components.
| You Give | You Receive | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Military Electronics | Steel Cable | Steel Cable is scarce as world loot. Military Electronics drop commonly from Order soldiers patrolling Manufacturing West. |
| Security Bot CPU | Anvil | Anvils scrap into large quantities of metal. Security Bot CPUs are farmable from Security Bots that spawn at night. |
| Scrap Metal | Cement Bag | Cement is used for barricades. Scrap Metal is abundant everywhere, making this an infinite cement source. |
| Anomaly (anomalous material) | Rebar | Anomalies spawn nightly at 1 AM. Rebar is used for ammunition and advanced crafting. |
Armor and Consumable Trades
These trades provide armor components and materials for consumables.
| You Give | You Receive | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Order Helmet | Welding Helmet | Component for the F.O.R.G.E. armor set. Order Helmets drop from Grunt enemies. |
| Super Tomato | Reflective Vest | Inferior to F.O.R.G.E. armor. Mostly for collection purposes. Super Tomatoes are renewable through portal world farming. |
| Anteverse Wheat | H. Acid | H. Acid is used for crafting anti-radiation syringes. Anteverse Wheat is farmable in portal worlds. |
Crafting the Air Compressor
The Air Compressor is the item you trade to the Blacksmith to receive the Heat Suit. It is a crafted item, not a world drop.
Air Compressor Recipe:
| Ingredient | Quantity | Acquisition Method |
|---|---|---|
| Canister | 1 | Loot from industrial areas in Manufacturing West |
| Pressure Gauge | 1 | Loot from wall-mounted equipment in Manufacturing West |
| Reinforced Hose | 1 | Crafted: 1 Hose + 1 Steel Cable + 1 Box of Screws |
| Chain | 1 | Loot from industrial crates in Manufacturing West |
Full Trade Chain:
- Farm ingredients from Manufacturing West industrial areas.
- Craft the Reinforced Hose at a crafting bench.
- Craft the Air Compressor at a crafting bench.
- Trade the Air Compressor to the Blacksmith for the Heat Suit.
Farming Routes for Trade Materials
Efficient farming is key to making repeated trades. The following table outlines the best methods for acquiring each input material.
| Input Material | Best Farming Method | Location / Enemy |
|---|---|---|
| Military Electronics | Defeat Order soldiers | Manufacturing West |
| Security Bot CPU | Defeat Security Bots at night | Manufacturing West |
| Scrap Metal | Loot from any container or enemy | Everywhere |
| Anomaly (anomalous material) | Defeat Anomalies that spawn at 1 AM | Manufacturing West |
| Order Helmet | Defeat Grunt enemies | Manufacturing West |
| Super Tomato | Farm in Portal Worlds | Mycofields or Flathill |
| Anteverse Wheat | Farm in Portal Worlds | Mycofields |
| Reinforced Hose | Craft from Hose, Steel Cable, and Screws | Crafting Bench |
| Solder | Loot from industrial containers | Manufacturing West |
| Axle Grease | Loot from maintenance areas | Manufacturing West |
Recovery Advice: If you run out of a specific item, check the Portal Worlds. These dimensions reset periodically, providing a renewable source for items like Super Tomatoes and Anteverse Wheat. For enemy drops like Military Electronics, simply wait for the Order soldiers to respawn in Manufacturing West.
