Choosing Your Next Step
Navigating the 50+ guides on this site can be overwhelming. This index is not a walkthrough. Instead, it helps you decide which guide to read next based on your current progress in the GATE Cascade Research Facility. It organizes the guides by the logical sequence of challenges you will face, from your first spawn to the deepest labs.
Use this page as a starting point. Each section below lists the relevant guide slugs and explains why you would need that information at that stage. If you are stuck, check the "Recovery" notes in each section.
Phase 1: First-Day Survival and Base Essentials
Your first priority is establishing a stable loop of food, water, and sleep. Do not invest time in complex projects until you have a safe room.
Prerequisite: Complete the tutorial (achievement "Down Under").
Route Choice:
- If you are dying of thirst: Read
water-thirst-managementfirst. The game does not explain hydration clearly. The cafeteria provides a Frying Pan, but you need a reliable water source. - If you are collapsing from fatigue: Read
fatigue-sleep-bed-placement. A powered bed is your first major milestone. - If you are starving: Read
beginner-cooking-recipes-guide. It covers safe soups and buff meals. Avoid eating raw ingredients. - If you have a stable base and want to grow food: Read
farming-agriculture-setup. This is skippable early on (achievement "Green Thumb").
Recovery: If you are stuck without resources, do not restart. The progression guide notes that items do not respawn in the main facility. Your best recovery is to push through the Office Sector to reach the Flathill Portal World, which has a regular respawn schedule for staple resources.
Phase 2: Power, Storage, and Crafting Bench
Once you have a base, you need power and organization. The Crafting Bench is your central hub.
Prerequisite: A safe room with a bed.
Decision Table: Choosing a Power Guide
| Your Problem | Guide to Read | Why |
|---|---|---|
| My fridge stops working at night. | power-battery-runtime-check | Explains the 270-second night cycle and battery drain. |
| I want to build a safe grid. | power-grid-star-topology | Prevents a single Tesla Tower failure from killing your entire base. |
| I have no power at all. | beginner-power-electricity-basics | Covers generators, batteries, and the basics. |
Workflow: Setting Up Your First Crafting Bench
- Craft the Bench: Use the
beginner-first-day-survivalguide to find the required materials (wood, metal). - Unlock the Keypad Hacker: Speak with Alice Mayfield or collect a Controller, LCD Screen, and Infrared Emitter. This unlocks the recipe for the Keypad Hacker (Tier 1). This is an unskippable step for progression.
- Upgrade the Bench: Once you have power, read
crafting-bench-upgradesto add modules like the Healing Module or Portal Suppression.
Recovery: If you cannot find a specific component (e.g., an LCD Screen), check the resource-farming-cable-carbon-lens-air guide for farming routes in Manufacturing West.
Phase 3: Office Sector and First Keypads
The Office Sector is your tutorial zone. Your main goal is to reach the end to unlock Flathill.
Prerequisite: A Keypad Hacker (Tier 1).
Route Choice:
- For a complete route: Read
office-sector-route. It covers the entire sector from Reception to the final elevator. - For a specific area: Read
security-level-1-office-receptionfor the first keycard and reception area. - For avoiding detection: Read
surveillance-cameras-securityto understand camera patterns and system resets.
Key Mechanic: The Keypad Hacker The Keypad Hacker is a gear item that unlocks doors. It can be upgraded.
- Tier 1: Unlocks doors in the Office Sector (e.g., Level 1 Security Kiosk, Level 2 Offices, Silo 3 door).
- Tier 2: Unlocks doors in Manufacturing West (e.g., large door by the crane, restroom near the supply room).
- Tier 5: Unlocks doors up to Clearance Level 5. The recipe is unlocked by reading the "Photon Receptors" email.
Recovery: If you are stuck on a keypad, check your Keypad Hacker tier. You cannot open a Level 2 door with a Tier 1 device. You must upgrade it.
Phase 4: Combat and Manufacturing West
You will face tougher enemies like Order soldiers and Pests. Manufacturing West is the next major area.
Prerequisite: Completed Office Sector (achievement "Office: Managed").
Combat Guides:
- For general weapon progression: Read
weapon-crafting-tier-list. - For fighting Order soldiers: Read
order-soldiers-combat-stealth. It covers stealth, shield use, and when to engage. - For farming Pests: Read
pest-creatures-combat. Killing one Pest is an unskippable achievement ("One Down, One Million To Go"), but you can avoid them if you choose.
Manufacturing West Route:
- Read
manufacturing-west-routefor the main path through the tunnel, garage, and Blacksmith access. - Use
security-level-2-vent-routeto bypass the front door and enter through the infirmary. - Complete the Blacksmith task (read
security-level-3-blacksmith-task) to unlock the Keypad Hacker Tier 2 and the Reinforced Hose.
Recovery: If you are overwhelmed by enemies, use the tram-system-travel guide to unlock fast travel between sectors. This allows you to retreat and resupply.
Phase 5: Base Defense and Labs
Once you have a strong base and have explored Manufacturing West, you can focus on defense and deeper exploration.
Prerequisite: Access to Manufacturing West (achievement "Synced Up").
Base Defense Workflow:
- Read
beginner-base-defense-setupfor the basics: Portal Suppression, Shock Traps, and Tesla Coils. - Read
defense-chopinator-tesla-tripminefor trap placement, power buffering, and defense layers.
Lab Sector Route:
- Read
lab-sector-survival-routefor the path through the Cryo-Lab, radiation layers, and accelerator prep. - Use
chemistry-liquid-nitrogen-isotopefor the production chain from the Cryo-Lab to the Mini-Collider.
Recovery: If you are dying from radiation, read armor-protection-radiation for Hazmat Suit and Gas Mask strategies. If you are stuck on a puzzle, check the chemistry-enethiol-solvent-biogel guide for controlled chemistry workflows.
