Tram system guide: unlocking stations and fast facility travel

Trams turn a 5-minute dangerous run into a 10-second safe trip. Unlock the stations by physically reaching each one.

The Problem

“Running between sectors takes forever. How do I unlock the tram stations?”

⚡ Before You Start

Get the Tram Station Key blueprint from The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West
Progress far enough to reach each locked tram station physically
Have a Keypad Hacker matching the security level of tram access doors

🎒 What to Bring

■Tram Station Key blueprint
■Keypad Hacker for security doors along the route
■Basic survival gear for the deep dive to reach each station

Prerequisites

  • Get the Tram Station Key blueprint from The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West
  • Progress far enough to reach each locked tram station physically
  • Have a Keypad Hacker matching the security level of tram access doors

Recommended Loadout

  • Tram Station Key blueprint
  • Keypad Hacker for security doors along the route
  • Basic survival gear for the deep dive to reach each station

Common Mistakes

  • 1.Expecting to unlock tram stations remotely — you must physically walk there first
  • 2.Ignoring the Tram Station Key blueprint because trams seem unnecessary early on
  • 3.Forgetting that some tram doors require higher-tier Keypad Hackers

The Problem

Running between sectors takes forever. How do I unlock the tram stations?

The Solution

Running between Office Sector and Manufacturing West takes roughly 5 minutes through hostile corridors — and that is if nothing spots you. The tram reduces that to a 10-second loading screen with zero enemy contact. It is the single biggest quality-of-life unlock in the mid-game.

How the Tram System Works Tram lines connect major facility sectors. The hub is Office Sector Level 1 and Level 2. From there, lines branch to Manufacturing West, Cascade Laboratories, and other destinations. Some stations are operational from the start. Others are locked and require a Tram Station Key to activate. The critical rule: you must physically reach a station on foot before you can unlock it. There is no remote unlock. No shortcut. You walk there once, you unlock it, and from then on the tram is instant.

Getting the Tram Station Key The blueprint comes from The Blacksmith, an NPC in Manufacturing West. Reach The Blacksmith by progressing through the Manufacturing Sector's main route — the same path that takes you past the Forge and toward the garage. Once you have the blueprint, craft the Tram Station Key at a powered Crafting Bench (see Crafting Bench upgrades). Materials are mid-game accessible; if you are missing components, you may need to push further into Manufacturing scavenging first.

Unlock Prioritization Three locked stations need the Tram Station Key. Unlock in this order:

  1. Manufacturing West (near the Digsite) — first priority. The Blacksmith, the forklift (see forklift guide), and the Train World portal access are all in Manufacturing West. This is the station you will use most frequently in the mid-game.
  2. Cascade Laboratories Lobby — second priority. Access to the laser puzzle, Rise portal, Containment Block approach, and late-game crafting materials. This station saves the longest and most dangerous walk in the game.
  3. The remaining locked station — unlock as you naturally reach it during story progression.

The Walk-Once Rule When you head out to unlock a tram station, treat it as an expedition. Gear up fully — armor, weapons, healing, food, water. The walk to Cascade Labs from Office Sector is one of the longest continuous routes in the game. Do it once, prepared. After unlocking, you never walk it again. Future trips to that sector are a 10-second tram ride.

Tram Safety Tram stations themselves are safe zones — enemies do not spawn inside station interiors. The approach corridors to stations may have enemies. When arriving at a station for the first time on foot, clear the immediate approach before interacting with the station console. You do not want to unlock a station while being attacked.

Integration with Other Systems

  • Tram + Forklift: Park the forklift at the Manufacturing West tram station. Tram in, load the forklift, drive to your destination.
  • Tram + Portal Runs: Use the Cascade Labs tram to reach the Adjustment Wing (Rise portal) and Containment approach. Portal farming (see farming guide) becomes viable when the commute is 10 seconds instead of 5 minutes.
  • Tram + Co-op: All players can use trams independently. Staggered arrivals at a destination mean the first player clears the station approach while others ride in safely.

Step-by-Step

  1. Reach The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West. Get the Tram Station Key blueprint.
  2. Craft the Tram Station Key at a powered Crafting Bench.
  3. Gear up for a full expedition — armor, weapons, healing, food, water. This is a one-time walk.
  4. Unlock Manufacturing West station (near the Digsite) first. This station connects to The Blacksmith, forklift, and Train World portal.
  5. Unlock Cascade Laboratories Lobby station second. This connects to Rise portal farming and Containment Block.
  6. Unlock remaining stations as story progression brings you to them.
  7. Use tram for all subsequent sector travel — instant, safe, no enemy contact.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting to unlock tram stations remotely from the hub — you must physically reach each station on foot first.
  • Ignoring the Tram Station Key blueprint because "I can just walk" — after the third Manufacturing West walk, you will regret this.
  • Attempting the Cascade Labs walk unprepared because "it is just a tram unlock trip" — it is one of the longest routes in the game. Gear up fully.
  • Unlocking stations out of order — Manufacturing West first (Blacksmith, forklift, Train World), Cascade Labs second (Rise, Containment).
