Assault Event survival: mechanics, bench targeting, and defense setup
How Assault Events work in Abiotic Factor: what triggers them, how bench targeting works in solo and co-op, how to delay or survive them, and when to build a proper defense instead of running.

Player Note -- Vex Runner: My first Assault Event happened during a crafting session. Enemies spawned around my bench and I had zero defense infrastructure. I survived by climbing somewhere they couldn't reach and waiting it out. After that I spent time understanding exactly how these events work before they happened again. The targeting behavior in solo vs co-op is the part most players get wrong.
Community: Not understanding Assault Event bench-targeting behavior is the most common base defense mistake on Steam Discussions — most players describe being surprised by which bench got targeted, especially in co-op — based on Steam Discussions.
How Assault Events work
On occasional nights, enemies will spawn around a Crafting Bench if it is within a certain range of a player. The event is announced the afternoon before: the message "The air feels strange. Be on your guard tonight" appears. This gives you one in-game afternoon to prepare or reposition.
In solo play: the event targets your primary Crafting Bench if you're within range of it.
In co-op play: the event targets the Crafting Bench closest to any player. This means base layout decisions in multiplayer have direct consequences — a bench placed in a dangerous position becomes an Assault Event magnet for the whole team.
Delaying the event: You can delay (pause) an Assault Event by moving away from all Crafting Benches. The event requires player proximity to a bench to proceed. If you leave the area, the event pauses until you return.
Assault Event types and unlock conditions
Different Assault Event types unlock as you progress:
| Event type | Unlock condition |
|---|---|
| Portal Storms | First Crafting Bench placed |
| Exor and Peccary | Silo 3 opened |
| Order Assaults | After meeting the Blacksmith |
| Zombie Horde | Furniture store completed |
Early game you will only face Portal Storms. The harder event types unlock progressively, so your defense needs scale with story progression.
The Portal Suppression Field upgrade
The most important base defense upgrade is the Portal Suppression Field on the Crafting Bench. This upgrade is required to properly defend against Assault Events. Without it, you are managing the event reactively. With it, you have a suppression radius that controls enemy approach.
Upgrade priority: get the Portal Suppression Field before you reach the Blacksmith meeting milestone. That is when Order Assaults unlock.
Defense build decision table
| Situation | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Pre-Blacksmith, low resources | Delay events by leaving bench range; invest in Portal Suppression Field upgrade first |
| Post-Blacksmith, basic defense | Build Chopinator placement around bench approaches; cover all entry directions |
| Late midgame with resources | Tesla Tripmines at choke points + Chopinators at bench perimeter |
| Co-op, multiple benches | Designate one defended bench as the primary; keep other benches outside player proximity during night |
Stop conditions
End your preparation and accept the event if:
- You have the Portal Suppression Field upgrade active
- You have at least two Chopinators covering bench approach vectors
- Your health and healing items are sufficient to survive a failed defense attempt
Do not attempt to fight through an Assault Event with no defense infrastructure. The delay option exists for that situation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
| Mistake | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Chopinators placed in center of room instead of doorway | Players assume coverage area is what matters | Place at chokepoints — door frames, narrow corridors |
| No Portal Suppression Field before Order Assaults unlock | Players don't know the unlock trigger | Meet the Blacksmith = Order Assaults start. Get the upgrade first. |
| Trying to fight through an event with no infrastructure | Overconfidence from early Portal Storms | Delay by leaving bench range until defense is ready |
| Co-op group placing benches near different players | Doesn't realize bench proximity determines target | Consolidate to one defended primary bench |
Event progression reference
Assault Events become harder as you progress. This is the sequence:
- Portal Storm: First Crafting Bench placed. Light enemies, manageable without defense infrastructure.
- Exor and Peccary assault: Silo 3 opened. Harder enemies, faster movement.
- Order Assault: After meeting the Blacksmith. Soldiers with weapons — requires real defense.
- Zombie Horde: After furniture store completion. High volume, sustained pressure.
Each step requires infrastructure that wasn't necessary for the previous step. The Portal Suppression Field upgrade should be in place before step 3.
Recovery when defense fails
If enemies destroy your Crafting Bench during an event:
- Retrieve your bench from where it dropped
- Find a new defensible location before redeploying
- Rebuild your defense infrastructure before the next event
- Use the delay mechanic (leave bench range) to buy time for rebuilding
A destroyed bench is recoverable. Do not try to fight through successive events without infrastructure just because you survived the first one.
