Choosing Where to Build: Location Priorities by Stage

A base that survives in Abiotic Factor depends less on the walls you build and more on the room you choose. A hallway with three entrances will drain your resources on repairs. A single-entrance room with power access can hold indefinitely with basic barricades. This guide covers the locations worth considering, organized by when you can reach them and what tradeoffs each one carries.

What Makes a Location Viable

Before reviewing specific spots, the following criteria determine whether a room can support a long-term base:

  • Entrance count — Fewer entrances means fewer points to defend. One entrance is ideal. Two is manageable with traps. Three or more requires constant patrol.
  • Power availability — Wall outlets let you run crafting stations, lights, and defensive devices without fuel. Rooms without outlets require a generator and fuel supply chain.
  • Water source — A sink, fountain, or pool inside or immediately adjacent saves repeated trips to boil water.
  • Trader proximity — Being near a trader reduces travel time when selling loot and buying materials.
  • Sector access — A base in a central sector reduces walking time across the facility.

Early-Game Locations (Office Sector, Floors 1-2)

Security Office (Floor 2)

This room becomes accessible once you reach Floor 2. It has a metal shutter door that can be closed from inside, blocking all entry. The room contains a coffee machine that provides a movement speed buff, multiple wall outlets, and sits next to the Floor 2 tram station.

Tradeoffs:

  • Single entrance with a controllable shutter makes defense straightforward
  • Requires reaching Floor 2 first, so it is not available immediately
  • If the shutter is destroyed, the room has no fallback defensive position

Setup approach: Place the crafting bench against the back wall. Storage containers along the side walls. A shock trap on the corridor side of the shutter, wired to a lever inside, can handle patrols that reach the door.

Cafeteria (Floor 1)

The Cafeteria is available from the start. It has vending machines for emergency food, a kitchen stove for cooking, bathrooms with sinks for water, and a fishing fountain nearby.

Tradeoffs:

  • Three entrances require barricading two and defending one
  • Open floor plan means enemies that breach can spread out
  • Large space allows for expansive building

When to use: Good for the first few nights while gathering materials to reach Floor 2. Plan to relocate once the Security Office is accessible.

Plaza (Floor 1)

The Plaza connects to multiple sectors and has a trader nearby. A fishing fountain is adjacent.

Tradeoffs:

  • Functions as a crossroads — enemy patrols pass through frequently
  • Multiple entry points from different directions
  • Central position reduces travel time to early sectors

When to use: Prefer when farming patrol encounters for materials. Not ideal for a permanent base due to the number of entry points.

Mid-Game Locations (Manufacturing West)

Top of the F.O.R.G.E.

This area becomes reachable after clearing Manufacturing West. It has a single ramp entrance, sits next to the Blacksmith trader, and is centrally located within the sector.

Tradeoffs:

  • Single ramp creates a clear chokepoint
  • Requires clearing Manufacturing West first — not a starter location
  • High ground limits ranged enemy angles

Setup approach: Place a Chopinator at the top of the ramp with a lever inside. This covers the only approach.

Garage Portal Security Room

This room contains a portal shortcut to the Labs, a charging station, and a bathroom.

Tradeoffs:

  • Two entrances — one is a garage door that cannot be closed
  • Portal access reduces travel time to Labs
  • Useful as a secondary outpost when running Labs frequently

Gym (Floor 2, Office Sector)

The Gym has a single entrance, a swimming pool for water and fishing, and a large flat area.

Tradeoffs:

  • Single entrance makes defense straightforward
  • Far from late-game sectors — expect longer travel times
  • Requires hauling furniture to make the space functional

When to use: Prefer when defense is the primary concern and travel distance is acceptable.

Late-Game Locations

Wildlife Pens / Aquarium Labs

This area contains a large open space, an aquarium for water and fishing, bathrooms, and a respawning Containment Bot that patrols nearby.

Tradeoffs:

  • Large space allows separate rooms for crafting, storage, and defense
  • Aquarium provides infinite water and a fishing spot inside the base
  • The Containment Bot drops scrap, CPUs, and sodas when killed — repeatable resource source
  • Close to Containment, Cascade Labs, and Security Sector
  • Requires clearing the area first
  • The Containment Bot can interrupt building if not dealt with

Setup approach: Set up an X-Ray Tower early to monitor the Containment Bot's patrol path. Build defensive barriers at the main entrance before expanding into the space.

Hydroplant Apartments

Multiple rooms, abundant water sources, and cooking stations are available here.

Tradeoffs:

  • Feels like a functional living space
  • Far from most late-game sectors
  • Better suited as a secondary outpost than a main base

Recovery Advice: When Your Base Gets Breached

If enemies destroy your barricades and reach your workstations:

  1. Fall back to a single-entrance room — Any room with one door can be held with basic barricades while you rebuild. The Security Office or Gym works for this.
  2. Rebuild the crafting bench first — Without a crafting bench, you cannot repair tools or build new defenses. Place it in the safest corner.
  3. Set up a shock trap at the entrance — A single shock trap wired to a lever buys time while you rebuild walls. Place it one tile inside the door so enemies trigger it before reaching your workstations.
  4. Restock healing items before reinforcing — Entering a breached base without healing items risks dying to leftover enemies. Craft bandages or cook food before going back in.

If the location itself is compromised (multiple entrances, no fallback position), relocate to a single-entrance room and salvage materials from the old base using a Screwdriver to package objects for transport.
