Leyak Abiotic Factor: spawn timer, how to kill, X-Ray Lamp recipe, and permanent containment

The Leyak is the most hated enemy in Abiotic Factor. Here's exactly how it spawns, how to kill it with X-Ray Tower and X-Ray Lamp, every crafting recipe, and how to permanently contain it with Unit 91.

The Problem

“This floating tentacle thing keeps appearing behind me every 15 minutes. I can't kill it with bullets, it opens my doors, and that sighing sound is burned into my brain. How do I make it stop?”

The Problem

This floating tentacle thing keeps appearing behind me every 15 minutes. I can't kill it with bullets, it opens my doors, and that sighing sound is burned into my brain. How do I make it stop?

The Solution

The Leyak (IS-0059) is the game's stalker enemy. It activates permanently after you enter the XR Containment room in Cascade Labs. It is immune to all physical damage. You deal with it using X-Ray equipment — either by staring it down (free, no loot), killing it with an X-Ray Tower or X-Ray Lamp (drops Leyak Essence), or permanently containing it with Containment Unit 91 in the late game.

How the Leyak Works

Activation

The Leyak becomes active the moment you walk into the XR Containment room in Cascade Laboratories — there is a warning sign with the creature's image next to the door. From that point on, it never stops until you build Containment Unit 91.

Spawn Rules

RuleDetail
Spawn timerEvery ~15 real-life minutes after activation or after being killed/despawned
First spawnCan be as fast as 30 seconds after leaving XR Containment
Spawn locationNear the player, always out of line-of-sight — behind you, around a corner, through a wall
TargetingOne player at a time in multiplayer, chosen randomly each cycle
Safe zonesCannot spawn inside Portal Worlds. Security Sector also blocks it.
Door interactionThe Leyak can open standard doors. It cannot kick open barricaded doors.

Greyeb: The Spawn Accelerator

Eating Greyeb or Greyeb Chowder massively increases Leyak spawn frequency. Use this when you are actively farming Leyak Essence. Avoid eating Greyeb when you are trying to progress through a sector without interruption.

Method 1: Stare It Down (Free, No Equipment)

The simplest solution. Requires nothing.

  1. Look directly at the Leyak with no obstructions (walls, glass, fences block line-of-sight).
  2. Hold eye contact for 3-10 seconds.
  3. The Leyak freezes and despawns. No loot drops.
  4. The 15-minute timer resets. It will be back.

When to use: You have no X-Ray equipment. You are mid-fight with other enemies. You just need it gone right now.

Downside: No Leyak Essence drops. You are just kicking the can 15 minutes down the road.

Method 2: X-Ray Tower (Static Kill, Drops Essence)

The X-Ray Tower kills the Leyak and makes it drop 1 Leyak Essence.

Recipe Unlock

Inspect the broken X-Ray emitter inside the Leyak's original containment chamber (the XR Containment room where you activated it). This teaches the recipe.

Crafting Recipe (Powered Crafting Bench)

IngredientQuantityHow to Get
Projection Matrix1Craft: 1 Anteverse Gem + 1 Optic Lens + 4 Staplers
Refined Carbon2Chemistry Bench: process Carbon Chunks
Lab Burner1Loot from Cascade Labs
Keyboard1Loot from any office area

How to Use

  1. Place the X-Ray Tower near a powered wall socket.
  2. Use batteries for backup during nighttime blackouts (the tower needs 24/7 power).
  3. When the Leyak enters the tower's range, it zaps for ~1 second and the Leyak dies — through walls.
  4. Collect the Leyak Essence (red floating orb) immediately.

Strategy: Place 2 towers at opposite ends of your base. Covers both approach angles. The Leyak walks into one of them eventually.

Method 3: X-Ray Lamp (Portable Kill)

The X-Ray Lamp is the handheld version. Battery-powered, no wall socket needed.

Recipe Unlock

Learned from the X-Ray Shield Emitter terminal in the Containment Zone Control Center (after escaping the Furniture Store portal world).

Crafting Recipe

IngredientQuantityNote
X-Ray Tower1Must have crafted one first
Leyak Essence1Must have killed at least 1 Leyak with a tower first
Jailbroken CPU2Drops from Containment Robots in Cascade Labs

How to Use

  1. Equip the X-Ray Lamp (takes a hotbar slot).
  2. When the Leyak appears, aim the beam at it.
  3. Hold for ~2 seconds. The Leyak freezes and dies.
  4. Collect the Leyak Essence.

Tip: Get close and let the Leyak start its attack animation first. This prevents the accidental "stare despawn" from overriding your X-Ray kill.

Method 4: Containment Unit 91 (Permanent Solution)

The endgame permanent fix. Once built and activated, the Leyak stops attacking you entirely.

Crafting Recipe

IngredientQuantityHow to Get
X-Ray Tower3Crafted (see above)
Hyper-Dense Neural Chip1Requires items from Hydroplant (5th sector), including drops from Security Bots
Quantum Glass10Crystalisk farming in Manufacturing Mines
Tram Station Key1Found during progression

How to Capture

  1. Build and place Containment Unit 91. Plug it in.
  2. Lure the Leyak near the unit.
  3. Blast it with the X-Ray Lamp. It drops Leyak Essence as usual, then gets trapped inside the unit.
  4. Keep the unit powered and stocked with Greyebs. The contained Leyak eats the Greyebs and periodically produces free Leyak Essence.

This turns the Leyak from a stalker into a passive Essence farm.

Leyak Essence: What It's For and Radiation Warning

Leyak Essence is radioactive. Do not carry it in your inventory. Each Essence stacks radiation damage. Store Essences in a dedicated crate away from your living area, or in a fridge/Hazard Crate.

UseEssences Needed
Craft X-Ray Lamp1
Containment Block X-Ray Barrier (story gate)4
Carbon Battery1 per battery
Containment Unit 91 captureConsumed on use

One free Leyak Essence can be found in the original XR Containment chamber — grab it early.
