Radiation survival: Hazmat Suit, anti-radiation pills, and how to not die carrying Leyak Essence

Radiation is a silent killer in Abiotic Factor. This guide covers every radiation source, how the Hazmat Suit and anti-radiation pills work, radiation thresholds for each sector, and exactly how to transport radioactive materials without dying.

The Problem

“I keep getting a radiation symbol on my screen and then I die 30 seconds later. Where is it coming from? How do I stop it?”

The Problem

I keep getting a radiation symbol on my screen and then I die 30 seconds later. Where is it coming from? How do I stop it?

The Solution

Radiation in Abiotic Factor comes from specific sources, stacks from multiple sources simultaneously, and kills you silently until it is too late. Unlike heat or cold — which have visible environmental tells — radiation damage builds invisibly until you notice your health bar evaporating. Here is every source and how to handle each one.

All Radiation Sources

SourceLocationSeverityHow to Deal
Leyak Essence (in inventory)Anywhere (carried item)High — scales per EssenceHazmat Suit + anti-rad pills. Store at base immediately.
Lab Rat spore cloudsLab Sector, ContainmentMediumKill Lab Rats at range before they spawn spores. Do not stand in the cloud.
Containment Block waste zonesContainment Block lower levelsMediumHazmat Suit required. Do not linger.
Reactor sector ambient radiationReactorsHigh — constantFull Hazmat Suit mandatory. Anti-rad pills active at all times.
Crystalisk death burstManufacturing MinesLow — one-time spikeStep back when a Crystalisk dies. The burst is small (~3m radius).
Irradiated food (eating raw)Anywhere (inventory item)Low — temporary debuffCook food. Never eat anything that says "irradiated" in the tooltip.
Night Essence (carried)Night RealmMediumSame protocol as Leyak Essence — suit + pills + fast transport.

How Radiation Damage Works

Radiation is a status effect that accumulates. It is not instant damage.

  1. Buildup phase: You enter a radiation zone (or carry a radioactive item). A meter fills on your HUD — the circular gauge next to your health bar with a radiation symbol.
  2. Threshold: When the meter is full, radiation damage begins. Health ticks down steadily — roughly 5 HP per second for medium sources, 15+ for high sources.
  3. Persistence: Radiation does not stop when you leave the source. The meter decays slowly. You can exit a radiation zone with a nearly-full meter and die 20 seconds later in a safe area.
  4. Stacking: Multiple radiation sources each contribute to the same meter. Carry 4 Leyak Essences in Reactor sector ambient radiation and the meter fills near-instantly.

Radiation Protection: Full Breakdown

Hazmat Suit

Effect: Significant radiation resistance. Reduces radiation buildup rate by ~70%.

How to get: Craft at Powered Crafting Bench. Recipe: 1 Hazmat Cloth + 1 Rubber Scrap + 1 Plastic Scrap + 1 Duct Tape.

Wear the full suit (head + chest + legs) in any sector marked "Radiation Hazard." The suit alone is enough for Containment Block waste zones. For Reactor sector, you still need pills.

Anti-Radiation Pills

Effect: Temporary radiation immunity. The radiation meter does not fill while the buff is active. Duration: 90 seconds.

How to get: Craft at Chemistry Bench. Recipe: 1 Purified Water + 1 Herb (any type) + 1 Chemical Flask.

Strategy: Pop a pill before entering any known radiation zone or before transporting radioactive items. Carry 5+ pills in your hotbar for endgame. The 90-second timer is short — do not waste time looting while the buff ticks down.

Brain Freeze Buff (Soup)

Effect: Minor radiation resistance. Stacks with Hazmat Suit but not a replacement for it.

Source: Slushie, Rootbear Float, Glacial Gazpacho Soup.

Useful when you need to push through a short radiation segment and do not want to burn a pill. Not sufficient for Reactor sector.

Transporting Radioactive Materials: Step by Step

This is the number one radiation death cause. Follow this protocol exactly.

Before the Trip

  1. Craft Hazmat Suit. Put it on.
  2. Craft 3+ Anti-Radiation Pills. Put them in your hotbar.
  3. Clear your inventory. You want space to grab the items and space to run.
  4. Plan the route. Know exactly which path you take from the items to storage. No detours.

The Transport

  1. Pop an anti-rad pill. The 90-second timer starts.
  2. Grab ALL radioactive items at once. Do not make multiple trips — each trip burns a pill and exposes you to buildup.
  3. Sprint directly to destination. No fighting. No looting. If an enemy is in the way, run past.
  4. Deposit items into storage. The radiation meter stops building the instant they leave your inventory.
  5. Check the radiation meter. If it is above 50%, wait in a safe area until it decays before removing the Hazmat Suit.

The Anticipate-Resupply Loop

At 60 seconds, check your distance to destination. If you will not make it before the pill expires, pop a second pill proactively. A wasted pill is cheaper than dying with 4 Leyak Essences and losing all of them.

Sector Radiation Requirements

Containment Block (waste zones)Hazmat SuitSuit + 1 pill for the transport sections
Night RealmHazmat Suit (for Essence transport only)Suit + 2 pills

The Leyak Essence Transport (Specific Scenario)

This kills more players than any boss. Specific strategy:

  1. Farm Essences one at a time via X-Ray Tower at base.
  2. Store each one in a dedicated "Radioactive" storage crate away from your main base.
  3. When you have 4 (or however many you need), equip Hazmat Suit, pop anti-rad pill, grab all 4, sprint to Containment Block X-ray barrier.
  4. Insert all 4 into the barrier terminal. Done. No more carrying Essences needed.
  5. If the barrier is farther than 90 seconds away: place a mini-outpost (bed + bench + crate) halfway and do two 45-second legs.
