Portal world resource comparison: which world to farm and when

A side-by-side comparison of all accessible portal worlds in Abiotic Factor — primary resources, reset schedule, protection requirements, and which world is the right farm target at each progression stage.

Player Note -- Lab Rat 7: I had five portal worlds available before I made a comparison chart. Before that, I was defaulting to the Far Garden every reset because I knew it. Turns out Rise had the healing items I needed and Train World had the Steel Cable I kept buying from traders. I was paying for things I could farm.

Community: Defaulting to familiar portal worlds rather than selecting by current resource need is one of the most consistent efficiency gaps on Steam Discussions — most players describe discovering better-suited worlds only after running out of a specific resource — based on Steam Discussions.

Portal world reset schedule

All portal worlds reset on the same timer: midnight between Tuesday/Wednesday and midnight between Saturday/Sunday (twice weekly). Player-placed items and structures persist through resets. Only natural resources refresh.

Exception: The Office Sector and Security Sector do not follow portal world reset timing.

Decision guide by resource need

Need healing items / medkits: Rise. Repeat every reset.

Need Power Cells: Flathill. Power Cell locations confirmed. Bring movement gear, not combat gear.

Need Steel Cable for crafting: Train World. Priority loot target on every visit.

Need Night Essence for Cascade Labs access: Night Realm. Farm Reaper with laser or holy weapons; ~2.5-minute cooldown between drops.

Need Anteverse materials (Gel, Carapace, Carbuncle): Mycofields. Highest yield but requires fire protection.

Need early food / wheat for farming: Far Garden. Accessible immediately from Office Sector.

Common mistakes

Farming a world by habit rather than by need: Check your current crafting queue and resource shortfalls before selecting a portal world for a session.

Ignoring the reset timer: Visiting a world the day after a reset is the highest yield. Visiting the day before a reset means everything has already been picked.

Not tracking what you took: Portal world resources don't display as "depleted" — you have to remember what you collected to know what will refresh on reset.

How to plan a farming session

Use this three-step process before each session:

  1. Identify your resource need. What are you crafting or preparing for? List the materials.
  2. Match need to world. Use the comparison table to identify which portal world provides those materials.
  3. Check reset timing. If the world recently reset, visit now. If it reset less than 2 days ago, wait or farm a different world.
StepQuestion to answer
1What do I actually need right now?
2Which portal world has it?
3Has that world reset recently?

Reset timing optimization

The twice-weekly reset means resources are at maximum yield immediately after reset and at minimum yield immediately before. For efficiency:

  • Best time to visit: Within 24 hours after a reset
  • Worst time to visit: Within 24 hours before a reset
  • Exception: Emergency resupply — visit regardless of timer if you're out of a critical resource

Multi-world session planning

Some sessions benefit from visiting two portal worlds in sequence. Effective combinations:

CombinationWhy it works
Rise + FlathillMedkits + food/Power Cells in one session
Night Realm + FlathillNight Essence + food for the same play session
Mycofields + FlathillHigh-difficulty farming followed by lower-risk food resupply

Avoid combining Mycofields with high-difficulty sector content in the same session — the environmental damage toll from Mycofields makes subsequent combat harder.

When not to use this guide

This comparison is based on the portal worlds available in the base game through version 1.4.0. If a major update added new portal worlds after this date, check the Abiotic Factor news and updates guide for current content.

The comparison also assumes you've unlocked the portal worlds listed. Worlds you haven't reached yet are not farming options regardless of their resource profile. If you're in early game, Far Garden and Flathill are your accessible options — optimize within those constraints rather than planning around worlds you can't reach yet.
