10 Abiotic Factor tips I wish I knew before my first 10 hours
After 500+ hours in the GATE Facility, here are the 10 things that would have saved me dozens of deaths and hours of wasted time as a new player.
I died 47 times in my first 10 hours of Abiotic Factor. Not because the game is unfair — because I made every wrong decision the game allows you to make. Here is what I wish someone had told me on day one.
1. Summer Intern is the only starting job that makes sense for new players
12 trait points. That's it. That's the argument. Every other job gives you 5-8 points and locks you into a playstyle you don't understand yet. Pick Summer Intern, take Wrinkly Brainmeat (+20% XP to all skills) and Fanny Pack (+2 hotbar slots), and learn what kind of player you are before committing to a specialized build.
2. The Security Office on Level 2 is your first real base — not the Cafeteria
The Cafeteria has three entrances and zero built-in defenses. The Security Office has metal shutters you close with a button. Press it and nothing outside touches you. It also has a coffee machine (infinite movement speed buff), multiple wall outlets, and it is 30 seconds from the tram station. Move there as soon as you reach Level 2.
3. Staplers are more valuable than you think
In Office Sector Level 2, every desk has a stapler. Pick them all up. Picking up a Stapler for the first time unlocks an entire branch of advanced tool recipes. Staplers are also a crafting ingredient for the Projection Matrix, which is required for the X-Ray Tower. If you ignored staplers in the early game, go back and grab them.
4. The Welding Spear makes early combat trivial
Grunts, Pests, and Peccaries all have melee range shorter than a Welding Spear's reach. If you space correctly — hit them at the tip of your weapon range — they cannot touch you. Craft a Welding Spear the moment you unlock it and use it until Manufacturing West.
5. Do not eat Raw Exor Hearts
Raw Exor Hearts look like food. They are not food. They are a critical crafting component for high-tier upgrades later in the game. Eating one early costs you hours of farming later. Store them.
6. Boil your water. Always.
Contaminated water gives you a sickness debuff that drains health and slows movement. The game does not warn you about this — you just drink from a sink and 30 seconds later you are dying. Boil water at a campfire or stove. One boiled water = 3 sips of safe hydration.
7. The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West is the most important NPC in the game
He trades 11 items, three of which are required for story progression. The most important trade: Air Compressor → Heat Suit. Without the Heat Suit, you die to ambient heat in the Tarasque boss room and the Mycofields portal world. The Air Compressor recipe unlocks when you pick up a Pressure Gauge and a Canister. Farm the ingredients before you reach Containment Block.
8. Leyaks cannot be killed with bullets
The floating tentacle thing that appears behind you every 15 minutes? Immune to all physical damage. Stare at it for 5 seconds and it despawns. To actually kill it and get Leyak Essence, you need an X-Ray Tower (place in your base, requires power) or X-Ray Lamp (portable, battery-powered). The X-Ray Tower recipe unlocks when you inspect the broken emitter in the XR Containment room in Cascade Labs.
9. Portal World loot respawns multiple times per week
Anteverse Wheat, Magnetic Alloy, Steel Cables — the rare materials you need for endgame gear — all respawn in portal worlds on a timer. Do not clear a portal world once and forget about it. Farm them repeatedly. One farming loop through all accessible portal worlds takes about 45 minutes and yields enough materials for 2-3 advanced crafts.
10. Build mini-outposts, not just one mega-base
Every time you unlock a new sector, spend 3 minutes dropping: 1 Crafting Bench (creates a safe zone), 1 Bed (sets your respawn), and 1 Storage Crate (dump loot without running home). When you die — and you will die — you respawn 30 seconds from your corpse instead of walking through three loading screens and two sectors.
