Chemistry: Enethiol, Refined Solvent, and Bio-Gel workflow

Chemistry is a controlled workflow, not a button you mash. Check station power, plan input routes, and never consume Enethiol or solvent on convenience crafts — they gate higher-value science upgrades.

The Problem

“The chemistry bench accepts materials, but the process feels like it either stalls, burns me, or wastes rare parts.”

⚡ Before You Start

Have a powered Crafting Bench with chemistry station access.
Secure sulfur and ethanol farming routes before crafting Enethiol.
Keep a stable power branch for chemistry operations — voltage dips waste materials.

🎒 What to Bring

■Chemistry Bench setup with stable power
■Labeled storage for catalysts (Enethiol, Solvent, Bio-Gel)
■Protective gear for acid-risk recipes

Prerequisites

  • Have a powered Crafting Bench with chemistry station access.
  • Secure sulfur and ethanol farming routes before crafting Enethiol.
  • Keep a stable power branch for chemistry operations — voltage dips waste materials.

Recommended Loadout

  • Chemistry Bench setup with stable power
  • Labeled storage for catalysts (Enethiol, Solvent, Bio-Gel)
  • Protective gear for acid-risk recipes

Common Mistakes

  • 1.Starting chemistry while the base power branch is unstable.
  • 2.Spending Enethiol or solvent because it is available, then blocking a higher-value upgrade.

The Problem

The chemistry bench accepts materials, but the process feels like it either stalls, burns me, or wastes rare parts.

The Solution

Chemistry in Abiotic Factor is not a simple crafting station — it is a production chain where input planning, power (see power system) stability, and catalyst conservation determine whether you progress or waste hours re-farming materials.

Enethiol — The Science Bottleneck Enethiol is used in high-value recipes including the Pentetic Acid Syringe (removes -10 radiation, 50% resistance for 15 minutes, requires First Aid level 4). It depends on sulfur and ethanol inputs — farm these routes before you need Enethiol output. The crafting chain is: collect sulfur from Manufacturing mineral deposits → secure ethanol from chemistry precursor crafting → combine at the Chemistry Bench. Do not spend Enethiol on low-priority convenience crafts. Check which downstream recipe is gated by Enethiol before consuming any — the Pentetic Acid Syringe alone justifies stockpiling Enethiol for Lab and Containment runs.

Refined Solvent — Planned Inputs Refined Solvent requires bleach and pure (clean) water inputs through proper equipment. Do not improvise — the Water Filter Barrel (1:1 tainted-to-clean ratio, unlocked in Cascade Laboratories) is the correct water source for chemistry work. Using boiled water (4:1 loss ratio, 250 mL output from 1,000 mL input) wastes both time and input volume. Plan your bleach farming route (Manufacturing Sector industrial areas) before starting solvent production. Craft in batches — one planned production session with all inputs ready is more efficient than three improvised sessions where you realize mid-craft that you are short on bleach.

Bio-Gel — Acid Risk Bio-Gel crafting involves acid risk. Wear protective gear (Hazmat Suit (see armor and protection guide) or Lab Mask at minimum). Do not craft Bio-Gel while at low health — the acid damage can finish you if you are already injured. Clear your inventory before starting: Bio-Gel production generates byproducts that need storage space. Craft near your Healing Briefcase (see healing guide) (6 HP/sec) so incidental acid damage is recovered immediately without consuming Medkits.

Power Stability The Chemistry Bench requires stable power. Before starting any chemistry operation:

  1. Check that no heavy-draw devices (fridges, chargers, Tesla Coils) share the same battery branch as your chemistry station.
  2. If a fridge compressor kicks on during synthesis, the voltage dip can corrupt the chemistry process and waste input materials.
  3. Put the Chemistry Bench on its own dedicated battery branch (Industrial Battery, 100 charge minimum) separate from food storage and defenses.

Catalyst Conservation Rule Catalysts (Enethiol, Refined Solvent, Bio-Gel) should be treated as strategic reserves, not consumables. Before spending any catalyst:

  • Check all recipes that require it. If a higher-value recipe is within reach, save the catalyst for that.
  • Return unused catalysts to labeled storage immediately after each crafting session. Leaving them in the bench inventory risks accidental consumption on a low-priority craft.
  • Stockpile catalysts during exploration downtime. When you are waiting for portal resets or crop growth, run chemistry precursor farming routes so catalysts accumulate passively.

Step-by-Step

  1. Verify the Chemistry Bench is on a stable, dedicated power branch — no fridges or defenses sharing the circuit.
  2. Collect sulfur (Manufacturing mineral deposits) and ethanol precursors before crafting Enethiol.
  3. Use the Water Filter Barrel (1:1 ratio, Cascade Labs unlock) for clean water — not boiled water (4:1 loss).
  4. Craft Enethiol only when the downstream recipe need is clear. Stockpile for Pentetic Acid Syringe production.
  5. Craft Refined Solvent in planned batches with all bleach and clean water inputs ready before starting.
  6. Craft Bio-Gel near your Healing Briefcase. Wear protective gear. Do not attempt at low health.
  7. Return unused catalysts to labeled storage immediately. Never leave them in the bench inventory.

Common Mistakes

  • Using boiled water (250 mL output from 1,000 mL input) for chemistry instead of the Water Filter Barrel (1:1 ratio).
  • Running chemistry on a power branch shared with a fridge — compressor kick-on during synthesis wastes materials.
  • Spending Enethiol on convenience crafts because "it is available" — Pentetic Acid Syringe requires it and saves lives in Labs.
  • Crafting Bio-Gel at low health without protective gear — acid damage finishes you.
  • Leaving catalysts in the bench inventory between sessions — accidental consumption on the next low-priority craft.
