Resource farming: Steel Cable, Refined Carbon, Optic Lens routes

Resource farming gets faster when each run has one target material and one return plan. Steel Cable, Refined Carbon, Optic Lens, and Air Canisters come from different loops, so mixed-purpose scavenging wastes carry weight.

The Problem

“I keep returning from farming runs with the wrong heavy junk and still miss the one part I needed.”

⚡ Before You Start

Identify the recipe or repair that needs the material before leaving base.
Keep a cart or storage plan ready for heavy returns.
Unlock enough Manufacturing access to reset safer loot loops.

🎒 What to Bring

■Platform Cart for cable and heavy salvage
■Repair tool and spare weapon durability
■Trade materials for Blacksmith exchanges

Prerequisites

  • Identify the recipe or repair that needs the material before leaving base.
  • Keep a cart or storage plan ready for heavy returns.
  • Unlock enough Manufacturing access to reset safer loot loops.

Recommended Loadout

  • Platform Cart for cable and heavy salvage
  • Repair tool and spare weapon durability
  • Trade materials for Blacksmith exchanges

Common Mistakes

  • 1.Trying to collect every useful item and returning without the one bottleneck material.
  • 2.Skipping hauling tools, then abandoning heavy resources halfway through the route.

The Problem

I keep returning from farming runs with the wrong heavy junk and still miss the one part I needed.

The Solution

General scavenging is how you end up with 40 Desk Phones and zero Steel Cable (see Steel Cable farming). Targeted farming — choosing one material before leaving base and building the entire route around it — is how you keep your crafting queue moving. Here are optimized routes for the four most common bottleneck materials.

Steel Cable — Train World Portal Steel Cable gates mid-game crafting: Industrial Batteries (100 charge), Cable Reroute (wire extension), workstation upgrades, and advanced traps. The highest-density source is Train World, a Portal World (see Portal Worlds) accessible from Manufacturing Sector. Train cars, cargo containers, and industrial debris inside drop Steel Cable at a much higher rate than any facility sector. The portal resets on a timer — run it on cooldown and stockpile Steel Cable in a dedicated Resource Crate. Wear your best backpack (Military +12 or Hiking +18 with 42% weight reduction). Steel Cable is heavy; put stacks on the hotbar for 25% weight reduction during extraction. Clear enemies first, break containers second, extract directly to base — no side-looting until Steel Cable target is secured.

Refined Carbon — Order Gear Breakdown Refined Carbon is not a random crate drop — it comes from breaking down Order soldier gear and shields. The most efficient source: Manufacturing Sector patrols and Security Sector Order squads. Kill the soldiers, collect their shields and armor pieces, break them down at a Repair and Salvage Station for Refined Carbon. This is more reliable than crate-farming because Order soldiers respawn on a predictable cycle and their gear is a guaranteed breakdown source. Bring a weapon suited for armored targets (Stun Baton or ranged) and Bandages for Bleeding from soldier attacks. One dedicated Order-farming loop can produce enough Refined Carbon for multiple crafting sessions.

Optic Lens — Blacksmith Trade Shortcut Optic Lens is needed for advanced optics crafting and certain workstation upgrades. The long route is random salvage — slow and unreliable. The shortcut: craft Reinforced Hose and trade it to The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West for Optic Lens. This bypasses the random salvage grind entirely. Reinforced Hose materials are common Manufacturing Sector loot; craft several at once and make a single trade trip for multiple lenses. If The Blacksmith does not have Optic Lens in their current trade inventory, check back after a quest progression or time cycle — vendor inventories refresh.

Air Canister — Fire Extinguisher Stripping Air Canisters are found in Fire Extinguishers throughout the facility. Manufacturing Sector has the highest density of extinguishers — the production floor, garage, and maintenance corridors each have multiple spawns. Extinguisher contents vary (some are empty, some have canisters), so strip everything in the area and expect some variance. Extinguishers respawn on the same cycle as other environmental loot. Map a route through Manufacturing that hits 5-6 extinguisher locations, strip them all, deposit at base, repeat after respawn.

The Single-Target Rule The common thread across all four materials: choose one before you leave base. Mixed-purpose runs where you "grab whatever looks valuable" reliably return with everything except the one item that is blocking your crafting queue. Deposit after each successful run, then decide the next target based on what you actually need — not what you happened to find.

Step-by-Step

  1. Before leaving base, check your crafting queue. Identify the single material blocking the most recipes.
  2. Steel Cable: enter Train World portal from Manufacturing. Clear enemies first. Break containers. Extract directly.
  3. Refined Carbon: hunt Order patrols in Manufacturing or Security Sector. Collect shields/armor. Breakdown at Repair Station.
  4. Optic Lens: craft Reinforced Hose. Trade to The Blacksmith in Manufacturing West. Repeat if vendor inventory refreshes.
  5. Air Canister: map 5-6 Fire Extinguisher locations in Manufacturing. Strip them all. Expect variance.
  6. After each run, deposit the target material before doing anything else. Only then consider side loot.
  7. Use the Platform Cart or forklift (see forklift guide) (24-slot cargo) for heavy Steel Cable hauls.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving base without a specific target material in mind — you return with general junk and zero bottleneck items.
  • Skipping hauling tools (cart, forklift) for heavy materials like Steel Cable, then abandoning items mid-route.
  • Crate-farming for Refined Carbon instead of breaking down Order gear — crates are low-yield; Order shields are guaranteed.
  • Trading The Blacksmith once and assuming the inventory is static — vendor inventories refresh. Check back periodically.
