Player Note -- Lab Rat 7: Every question on this page is one I either asked myself or saw asked in the first week of playing. The answers exist in the wiki, but finding the right page for each question takes time you'd rather spend playing. These 25 answers are the short version.
Community: These questions represent the most consistent early-game knowledge gaps on Steam Discussions — each one appears repeatedly in new player threads, which is how this list was assembled — based on Steam Discussions.
Getting Started
Q: How do I survive the first day? Talk to Dr. Ulrich Thule in the cafeteria to start the objective chain. Set a Makeshift Bed as your respawn point before exploring. Find a wall socket to power a Crafting Bench. Secure a Water Cooler — it holds 4,500ml but is not renewable on its own. Don't carry more than you can afford to lose. See the First Day Survival guide.
Q: Where do I find a bed? Makeshift Beds are found in early Office Sector rooms — look in sleeping quarters and storage areas. You can also craft one at a Crafting Bench once you have the required materials. Your first bed should be placed close to your base and interacted with to set it as your active respawn.
Q: Where should I put my first base? Choose a room with one or two entry points, a nearby wall socket, and a clear return route. Avoid large rooms with multiple doors — they're harder to defend during Assault Events. The area near the cafeteria on Office Sector Level 1 works for most early-game setups.
Q: How do I get food early? The cafeteria has food items in the early game. Cooking fish from the Plaza fountain produces Antefish Soup, which is the most accessible early food loop. See the Cooking guide.
Q: How do I manage water? The Water Cooler holds 4,500ml. Tainted Water from pools and fountains can be boiled in a Cooking Pot at 4:1 ratio (1,000ml in → 250ml clean out). Prioritize finding a renewable Tainted Water source near your base. See the Water guide.
Core Mechanics
Q: What do I lose when I die? Items in your inventory are dropped and stay on your corpse. Items in your hotbar remain with your character but lose some durability. Your respawn location is the last active Makeshift Bed you interacted with — if none is set, you return to the starting area. Your corpse can be recovered to retrieve dropped items.
Q: What is the Safe Area and how does it work? When a powered Crafting Bench is placed, it creates a radius called "Home Sweet Home." No enemies will spawn within this radius under normal conditions. Exception: Assault Events override the Safe Area suppression. The bench must be powered to maintain the Safe Area effect.
Q: What is the difference between Energy Brick and Power Cell? These are two completely different items. Power Cells power specific devices and door mechanisms. Energy Bricks are crafting components used in recipes and certain tech devices. They are not interchangeable. Using an Energy Brick where a Power Cell is required will not work.
Q: How does the power system work? Wall sockets are power sources. Plug strips expand connection points from one socket. Batteries provide fallback power. Devices draw from whichever branch they're connected to. See the Power Basics guide.
Q: What is an Assault Event? On certain nights, enemies spawn around the Crafting Bench closest to a player. You receive an in-game warning the afternoon before: "The air feels strange. Be on your guard tonight." You can delay the event by moving away from all benches. The Portal Suppression Field bench upgrade is required for effective defense. See the Assault Event guide.
Q: Do portal worlds reset? Yes. All portal world resources reset twice weekly: at midnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, and at midnight between Saturday and Sunday. Player-placed structures persist. Natural resource nodes (loot, plants, enemies) refresh. The Office and Security Sectors do not follow this schedule.
Q: How does the Tram system work? Trams connect sectors and require Tram Station Keys to unlock specific routes. Keys are found in locked rooms and from specific enemies. Once a route is unlocked, tram travel between those points is available for all subsequent sessions. See the Tram System guide.
Progression Questions
Q: Where is the Blacksmith? The Blacksmith is in Manufacturing West. The route requires navigating through the Maintenance Tunnels from the Office Sector elevator. See the Manufacturing West Route guide.
Q: Can I change my job after starting? Yes. IS-0017 is a machine located in Cascade Laboratories that allows you to change your job and traits. Using it resets all skills to level 3 and removes starting gear bonuses from your original job. The IS-0017 becomes available after reaching Cascade Labs, which requires completing Manufacturing West.
Q: How do I get Maestro Armor? Maestro Armor is dropped by the Symphonist boss. See the Symphonist Boss Fight guide.
Q: What are Leyak Essences used for? Leyak Essences are used in crafting recipes for anomaly-tier items and are required to disable the X-Ray barrier in Containment Block Helmholtz. See the Leyak Essence Farming guide.
Q: What is the endgame gear progression? The endgame gear path involves crafting bench upgrades, specific boss drops, and high-tier crafting materials found in Reactors and later sectors. See the Endgame Gear Progression checklist.
Q: How do I unlock Rise portal? Rise is accessed through a laser reflector puzzle in the Adjustment Wing of Cascade Laboratories, followed by clearing a Slime Wall blocking the portal entrance. See the Laser Reflector Puzzle guide.
Q: How do I open the Cryo-Lab in Cascade Labs? The Cryo-Lab requires navigating the correct elevator sequence in Cascade Labs. Not all elevators connect to all floors. See the Cascade Labs Walkthrough.
Multiplayer
Q: How does co-op work? Abiotic Factor supports co-op play. All players share the same world state. Assault Events target the bench closest to any player — this affects base placement decisions. Storage is shared. See the Multiplayer Co-op Tips guide.
Q: How do I set up a dedicated server? Dedicated server setup requires configuring hosting ports and connection settings. See the Dedicated Server Setup guide.
Technical and Other
Q: Where do I buy Abiotic Factor? Abiotic Factor is available on Steam. See the Where to Buy guide for current availability.
Q: Does the game have mod support? Official mod support status depends on the current version. Check the official Steam store page and the Abiotic Factor Steam Discussions for the current state of community modding.
Q: Where is the save file located?
Save files are stored in your Windows AppData folder. The exact path is: %APPDATA%\LocalLow\Deep Field Games\Abiotic Factor\. Back up this folder before major game updates.
Q: How do I improve performance on a low-spec PC? Lower shadow quality, reduce draw distance, and disable post-processing effects in the in-game settings. Abiotic Factor's performance is most affected by lighting and physics calculations. Reducing both has the largest impact.
Q: The game isn't launching — what do I check first? Verify game files through Steam (right-click game → Properties → Local Files → Verify). Ensure your GPU drivers are up to date. Check the Steam Discussions for the latest known launch issues.
